Big South Fork National Riverand Recreational Area
The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area was established to protect the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River as well as it’s tributaries. Covering over 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau, the area has miles of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs making it a popular destination stop for a wide range of outdoor recreational activities!
Visitors to the Big South Fork routinely stay at the nearby Historic Rugby, TN, a historic settlement featuring beautiful architectuer and history. Rugby also offers accomdations including a Bed and Breakfast making it an ideal place to stay while visiting the Big South Fork! Campers will feel right at home in one of the two developed campgrounds inside the Park, Bandy Creek Campground in Tennessee or the Blue Heron Campground for those on the Kentucky side of the Park. Camping in these areas is open April through October, and reservations are required.
The Big South Fork offers stunning scenary while hiking it’s trails, as well as whitewater rafting and paddling on the river. The Big South Fork area is also known for it’s excellent backpacking and rock climbing, from beginner to advanced, you’ll find what you are looking for here.
Horseback riders will find over 180 miles of horseback trails. The trails vary in length and difficulty, from short day rides to advanced loops that take several days to complete. Because of the amount and length of the trails, horseback riders are encouraged to purchase a Trails Illustrated Map from the Park Visitor Center or one of the local businesses in the area. Four horse stables are located in the Park, Bandy Creek Stables, Station Camp, Bear Creek, and Charit Creek Lodge; for more information on these stables please visit the National Park Service website.
Hunting, fishing, and trapping are also allowed inside of the park. So no matter what you enjoy doing, you will have fun at the Big South Fork!
